Lehigh was platted in the 1950s and 60s and sprawls for miles. The original-era homes still standing were built on cast iron.
Lehigh Acres is one of the largest platted communities in the state, laid out in the 1950s and 60s as a mail-order land deal with roads and lots drawn long before most of them ever got a house. That history is why the housing here is such a mix. Newer construction fills in around scattered original-era homes, and telling them apart matters, because only one of them has cast iron under the slab.
A newer Lehigh home built on PVC does not have our problem at all. But the houses that went up during the early build-out, the ones still standing from that first wave, were plumbed with cast iron. In a place this spread out, we go by the age of your specific house, not the neighborhood, because two homes a block apart can be thirty years apart in age.
Cast iron corrodes from the inside. In SW Florida’s wet ground it channels along the bottom and cracks, and after fifty-plus years the original-era Lehigh lines are at the end of that road. If your drains gurgle, back up, or clear only to fail again in a week, that is the pattern. The full explanation lives on our why cast iron fails guide.
The call usually starts with an insurer, not a clog. A 4-point inspection flags the cast iron, the non-renewal clock starts, and now there is a deadline. We put a camera down the line first, always. Some of these older Lehigh runs are solid enough to line – CIPP around seventeen thousand, floors stay closed. Others are bellied or broken and need a full dig replacement, thirty to fifty. We quote both and we tell you which your pipe honestly needs. We do not upsell a tear-out that the camera does not justify.
